This day was originally known as Washington's birthday. This day celebrates the birth of our first president, and up until the 1980's, was celebrated on the birthday of Washington. It was moved to the third Monday in February to include the celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday.
On this day, Americans should honor all presidents. There have only been forty three men who have the title of President of the United States. Many are house hold names: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and of course the two George Bush's. These men have inherited extraordinary power. They have led America through thick and thin, hot and cold, and everything in between. They have made some of the biggest decisions anyone could make, and can it can be argued that each one of these men have left America better off.
-President George Washington set the precedent for every president proceeding him. Every president, excluding FDR, has served no longer than two terms. He also warned about the danger of political parties.
-President Thomas Jefferson was the main architect and writer of the Declaration of Independence.
-President Abraham Lincoln was an abolitionist. Under his direction, he helped abolish slavery and ensure the right to vote regardless of color. He was also the first president of the Republican party.
-President Theodore Roosevelt solved many international conflicts. He used the saying "Walk softly and carry a big stick attitude", of running foreign policy.
-President Franklin Roosevelt brought America fully out of isolationism by entering the second world war. With that, also came a boom in our economy.
-President Kennedy led us out of a nuclear Holocaust, and proposed the Voting Rights Act. He was unfortunately assassinated on November 22nd, 1963.
-President Reagan increased defense spending, entering an arms race with the Soviet Union. We out spent the Soviets, and the Soviet Union collapsed. He saw in his term, the end of the Cold War.
-President George H.W. Bush led the 100 hour war. He stopped Sadam from taking over Kuwait.
-President Clinton proposed and signed legislation to reform welfare. He also had two years in his term, in which there was a surplus.
-Finally, President George W. Bush has kept America safe since September 11th, 2001. He has created a Democracy in Iraq, and crushed the Taliban.
These great men have achieved a goal sought by many. These fourty three men deserve our respect, and honor. Today, we must show them it.
